Aleve Dosage Calculation

Aleve is considered a NSAID( nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug), with a main ingredient being naproxen sodium. Naproxen reduces prostaglandin and thromboxane synthesis, thereby reducing pain and inflammation (Davies & Anderson,1997).

 The label is below:

Aleve is used for a variety of conditions including gout, ankylosing, bursitis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, menstrual cramps, muscular/back aches, temporarily reducing fever and offering generalized pain relief; however, it has to be noted that taking Aleve will not stop the progression of joint damage for the above conditions, but will reduce inflammation and pain (Brutzkus, Shahrokhi & Varacallo, 2023).

There are contraindications for taking Aleve, including interaction if taking certain medications like lithium, methotrexate and probenecid, along with ACE inhibitors like lisinopril, water pills like furosemide and Corticosteroids like prednisone.  It also should not be used during the last trimester of pregnancy, as it can result in birth defects. If someone has had an allergic reaction to aspirin, history of asthma or uticaria (hives), they should be advised not to take this medication. In the elderly it can compromise renal function or reduce renal function if incorrect dosage taken by anyone; it can also result in myocardial infarction or chest pain, fluid retention, drowsiness, tinnitus, dyspnea. Other adverse reactions can include GI bleeds, leading to low RBC counts; this is just a few of the adverse reactions (Davies & Anderson,1997).

 

Your physician orders you to take 440mg of Aleve, for the first dosage. One tablet of Aleve is 220mg.

This is the solution:

440 mg (total dosage)= 220x

X= 440/220

X=2 tablets

 

A physician orders a patient to take 50 mg of Benadryl for allergies every 4-6 hours. One table is 25mg. How many tablets would you take?
